Xiaomi redmi note 4 review : jack of all trades, redmi note 4 reviews

Quick take:

It"s hard to lớn follow up on the Redmi chú ý 3, but mi has managed lớn deliver a great successor in the Redmi chú ý 4. The phone now comes with more memory và storage, và the design changes make the device feel upmarket. Battery life has also received a boost thanks to lớn the Snapdragon 625 So
C, & the camera is also better than what we saw last year. In short, this is the phone to beat in the budget segment.

Xiaomi had a great năm nhâm thìn on the back of the Redmi cảnh báo 3. Over 3.6 million units of the phone were sold, allowing Xiaomi to lớn cross $1 billion in revenue from the country for the first time.

However, competition in the budget segment has intensified, with Lenovo launching a bevy of models in the country last year. The moto G4 series continues to lớn sell in huge numbers, and the Z2 Plus picked up a discount recently, bringing the cost of the phone down to ₹14,999. For that amount, you get a handset powered by the Snapdragon 820. The Honor 6X — which has a dual camera thiết đặt — is slated lớn make its debut in India next week, và Samsung"s Galaxy J7 & Galaxy On Nxt offer a lot of value for their asking price.

To counter the threat, xiaomi mi is selling three variants of the Redmi note 4 in India: the base mã sản phẩm has 2GB of RAM và 32GB storage and retails for ₹9,999 ($145), then there"s a variant with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage for ₹10,999 ($160), & the most interesting mã sản phẩm is the one with 4GB of RAM & 64GB storage, which is available for just ₹12,999 ($190).

Can the Redmi note 4 fend off its rivals and solidify its place in this category? Let"s find out.

About this review

I (Harish Jonnalagadda) am writing this đánh giá after using the Redmi note 4 variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage for two weeks in Hyderabad, India. The phone was connected lớn Airtel"s 4G network for the first week, & Jio"s Vo
LTE-enabled network for the rest of the nhận xét period. The phone was on the MIUI 8 beta channel, and received three updates with stability fixes.

Exquisite

Xiaomi Redmi cảnh báo 4 Design & screen

The Redmi cảnh báo 4 is roughly the same kích thước as its predecessor, but the kiến thiết has been significantly altered. The phone now sports an all-metal chassis, with xiaomi mi stating that it takes over 30 steps khổng lồ turn the aluminum block into a finished piece. The phone is slightly heavier than the Redmi cảnh báo 3, but the added heft makes a huge difference in day-to-day usage. It"s weighted perfectly, and Xiaomi managed to lớn trim the overall thickness by 0.3mm, bringing the phone down to 8.4mm.

The Redmi cảnh báo 3 featured ungainly plastic at the top & bottom, but the note 4 is entirely made out of aluminum. It instead has antenna lines at the back, which provide signal reception while also serving to lớn break up the design. The phone isn"t as curved at the back, with the chamfered edges making for better ergonomics.

These are all subtle changes, but they culminate lớn produce a phone that"s vastly different. The end result is that the Redmi chú ý 4 feels great to lớn hold & use. The overall fit & finish is one that befits a high-end device, and shows how far companies that cater khổng lồ the budget segment have come.

Rounding off the design, the Redmi lưu ý 4 has a speaker grille at the bottom, & although it is a single speaker, there are two sets of grills for the sake of symmetry. They"re joined in the middle by a micro
USB port, an odd choice in 2017 considering the industry is moving to lớn USB-C. The Redmi Pro offers the newer USB-C port, and it is likely xiaomi mi will switch to lớn the standard from the next generation. At the top, you"ll find the 3.5mm jack and an IR blaster.

The Redmi note 4"s thiết kế wouldn"t look out of place on a high-end phone.

The power và volume buttons are on the right, & they offer decent tactile feedback. The SIM card slot is on the left, và you can either slot in two SIM cards (micro
SIM + nano
SIM) or a SIM thẻ along with a micro
SD card. Round the back, the camera sensor & lens module are aligned with the fingerprint sensor, which is slightly recessed.

The front is dominated by a 5.5-inch display, and the addition of 2.5 chiều curved glass makes a substantial difference when using the screen. The hardware navigation buttons are backlit, allowing for easy access at night. The display itself is brighter and has better màu sắc accuracy than the Redmi chú ý 3, and is easily one of the best panels in this segment.

You get the usual mi additions as well — there"s Reading Mode, a blue light filter that makes it easier lớn read text at night. The mode lets you create a schedule to automatically enable it, và there"s also the option of enabling it for selected apps. You can also adjust the màu sắc temperature to your liking, và toggle double tap lớn wake the screen.

All the details

Xiaomi Redmi cảnh báo 4 Hardware

Xiaomi has excelled at offering great hardware in its budget phones, and that hasn"t changed with the Redmi chú ý 4. The Chinese variant of the Redmi cảnh báo 4 is powered by Media
Tek"s Helio X20 So
C, but as xiaomi mi isn"t allowed khổng lồ launch phones powered by Media
Tek processors in India, the local variant is powered by a Snapdragon 625. Although the naming convention may lead one khổng lồ believe that it is a downgrade from the Snapdragon 650 used in the Redmi lưu ý 3, that isn"t the case.

Unlike the 28nm Snapdragon 650, the Snapdragon 625 is built on the 14nm node, resulting in greater energy efficiency. The mid-range chip powers through everyday tasks with ease, & there wasn"t any lag or slowdown in the two weeks I"ve used the phone. The 4GB of RAM also makes a difference when multitasking. The Snapdragon 625 can also handle visually-intensive games Modern Combat 5: Blackout or Asphalt 8 without breaking a sweat.

The Redmi lưu ý 4 handles everything you throw at it with aplomb.

Even though the base mã sản phẩm of the handset comes with 2GB of RAM, it is great lớn see xiaomi mi moving away from 16GB internal memory và instead offering 32GB as the base storage. The phone comes with the usual range of connectivity options, including dual-band Wi-Fi, bluetooth 4.1, LTE with Vo
LTE, & an IR blaster that lets you control a variety of appliances.

There"s no NFC on the phone, but that isn"t as major an omission as it is in Western markets. App android Pay is yet to make its debut in India, and it doesn"t look lượt thích it will bởi vì so anytime soon.

The fingerprint sensor at the back is slightly recessed, making it easy khổng lồ locate it with your finger. Its position beneath the camera module makes it easy to lớn access, and the sensor itself is quick khổng lồ authenticate. It is an always-on sensor, so you"ll be able to lớn unlock the device even when the display is off.

The speaker on the Redmi lưu ý 4 is significantly better than its predecessor, và that"s mainly due to its placement. Moving the speaker lớn the bottom means that it is no longer muffled when lying flat on a surface. The unique from the speaker is average — with sound getting distorted at high volumes — but at least you won"t miss any incoming calls or notifications.

MIUI saga continues

Xiaomi Redmi lưu ý 4 Software

MIUI 8 is Xiaomi"s biggest release in a long time, introducing much-needed visual flair along with new customization options. The skin is based on app android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, và the phone is currently on the December security patch. Xiaomi is testing a Nougat preview of MIUI, và will be rolling it out widely in the coming months.

Setting up the Redmi note 4 is a hassle, as MIUI still doesn"t offer a way khổng lồ restore apps and settings. So you"ll have lớn individually install apps from the Play Store after booting into the phone. Another issue is with the phone"s settings, which is a jumbled mess in its current iteration. Settings you"d normally find on other apk phones are inexplicably missing, and the ones that are available aren"t located where you"d expect. For instance, if you want to enable installation of apps from outside the Play Store (useful for installing apps like Spotify), you"ll have to lớn go lớn Settings -> Additional settings -> Privacy ->Unknown sources. On most other phones, it is at Settings -> Security -> Unknown sources.

MIUI is frustrating to lớn use at times, but it is packed with features.

Xiaomi is like the Alfa Romeo of phone brands. Its designs are evocative, và its customers are very passionate about the brand. And lượt thích all Alfas, Xiaomi"s phones over up being quirky và frustrating lớn use. With the Redmi lưu ý 4, that shows up in the form of annoying lock screen issues.

Lock screen notifications are a hit và miss in MIUI 8. While I receive all tin nhắn notifications, I"m yet to lớn see one for Google"s Messenger or Facebook Messenger. On the subject of notifications, MIUI 8 has a retooled notification shade that shows quick toggles & incoming messages in the same place. You can expand notifications, but doing so requires a zoom in gesture, not the best solution when you"re using the phone one-handed.

Then there"s the aggressive memory management. I use Minima for live wallpapers, and to get it lớn work, the tiện ích needs khổng lồ be running in the background. Every time I closed the Minima app, the wallpaper switched back lớn the system default.

That said, MIUI 8 has a ton of new features và customizability. There"s Dual Apps, which lets you run two instances of the same apps, allowing you to lớn run two Whats
App or Facebook accounts on the same phone. With Second Space, you can mix up two profiles on the phone, with each featuring a different home screen. The profiles are sandboxed và use their own distinct data, but you vì chưng get the option to lớn move data between profiles.

MIUI 8 also offers đoạn clip editing tools in the gallery app, there"s a new power-saving mode that lets you conserve the battery, và there"s a Quick Ball feature that lets you access shortcuts with ease. You can also take scrolling screenshots, convert currency and other units on the fly, và much more.

Eight new features in MIUI 8

There"s also a one-handed mode, which is accessible with a left-to-right (or vice versa) swipe gesture across the navigation keys. You can shrink the screen form size down khổng lồ 4.0 inches, 4.5 inches, or 3.5 inches, making it more convenient khổng lồ use the phone one-handed. Xiaomi mi also offers several features for the Indian market. The dialer includes caller ID information for the delivery staff of Amazon, Domino"s, Zomato, và other brands, making it easier for you khổng lồ identify incoming calls.

Better than before

Xiaomi Redmi chú ý 4 Camera

The Redmi note 4 has a 13MP camera with f/2.0 lens và PDAF. There"s a 5MP camera up front that also sports an f/2.0 lens. The camera app is easy to lớn use and comes with a wealth of options, including filters, beautify effects, & a manual mode that lets you tweak the ISO, trắng balance, & exposure settings. You can also take tilt-shift photos, phối a countdown timer, shoot panoramas, & select from various scenes.

The camera does a great job of taking photos in well-lit conditions, & the resulting images are full of detail và offer saturated colors. You get more detail when shooting in HDR, but doing so takes slightly longer khổng lồ shoot images. Images at low-light turned out decent, but you"ll have lớn put in a lot of effort to get passable shots.

Incredible

Xiaomi Redmi cảnh báo 4 Battery life

The 4100m
Ah battery on the Redmi lưu ý 4 is slightly larger than its predecessor, but the shift to lớn 14nm has led to lớn vastly increased battery life. The phone easily lasts a day on a full charge if you"re a heavy user, và more often than not, you"ll get a day and a half worth of usage out of the phone.

You can eke out two days" worth of battery from the phone with medium usage that involves a few hours of streaming music, watching videos, & browsing the web. The one downside with the battery is that the Redmi cảnh báo 4"s fast charging is limited to 5V/2A. That"s equivalent to Quick Charge 2.0 speeds, and correspondingly the phone takes nearly two hours to lớn fully charge.

Can"t go wrong

Xiaomi Redmi note 4 Bottom line

Xiaomi didn"t try to re-invent the wheel with the Redmi note 4. Instead, it focused its attention on fixing the few flaws the Redmi chú ý 3 had — camera and design. In doing so, it created a well-rounded device that offers excellent value for money. The fact that the phone is now available with 4GB of RAM và 64GB storage is an added bonus.

The thiết kế of the phone makes it look much more premium than its predecessor, và the chamfers at the back result in better ergonomics. Same goes for the addition of 2.5d curved glass at the front, which ensures that the phone doesn"t dig into your palm when you"re using it.

If you want a phone with excellent battery life, just get the Redmi lưu ý 4.

MIUI is still resource-heavy & buggy at times, but the latest iteration has fixed several problems from MIUI 7, và the interface in general looks much better. Battery life has also increased, making the Redmi chú ý 4 one of the best devices in this segment when it comes lớn battery longevity.

Like its predecessor, the Redmi cảnh báo 4 sets the bar for what phones can achieve in the budget segment. This is the phone to beat in 2017.

Get it already

Should you buy it? Absolutely

If you"re looking for a budget handset, then the Redmi note 4 should be high on your list. For just ₹9,999 — ₹12,999 for 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage — you get a phone with a great design và internal hardware, decent camera, và amazing battery life. There"s no doubt that mi will sell millions of Redmi chú ý 4 units in India. The only question is if the manufacturer will be able lớn meet the initial demand. For now, the phone is up for sale exclusively on Flipkart.

Will the Redmi note 4 help xiaomi with its dream run in the Indian market or is it just another run-of-the-mill budget smartphone? Let’s find out in our detailed review!
The Redmi lưu ý 4 is not perfect, but it is a well-rounded package that one wouldn’t hesitate to lớn recommend lớn anyone looking for a budget or mid-range smartphone. Packed in a neat chassis, the smartphone performs great & is a compelling value-for-money smartphone.

The mi juggernaut now includes fitness bands, earphones, air purifiers, và more, but of course smartphones are its real stars. The company had a great năm nhâm thìn in India selling over 3.6 million units of the Redmi lưu ý 3, và crossing $1 billion in revenue in the country for the first time.

Now, it is time for the successor of that bestselling device. The Chinese OEM would like to continue the momentum with the Redmi cảnh báo 4, the company’s first launch of the year in India. The affordable điện thoại market in India is very crowded, and Xiaomi wants to ward off multiple threats based on pricing or the specifications sheet by offering three variants of the Redmi lưu ý 4 with different memory configurations.

For this review, I took the vị trí cao nhất variant of the Redmi chú ý 4, the one with 4GB of RAM và 64GB of internal storage, for a spin. While the Chinese version of the Redmi lưu ý 4 packs in a Media
Tek So
C, this one -- the India variant -- has a Qualcomm chip.

Will the Redmi note 4 help mi with its dream run in the Indian market or is it just another run-of-the-mill budget smartphone? Let’s find out in our detailed review!

Unlike its predecessor, the Redmi cảnh báo 4 sports an all-metal chassis. There’s a 2.5d curved-edge glass up front with chamfered edges for better ergonomics. The device fits very well in the palm and one-handed usage isn’t an issue.

At the back, there are antenna lines running across the top & bottom which break up the kiến thiết while improving signal reception. The speaker grilles are at the bottom this time around instead of being at the back, và although the device packs in a single speaker, there are two sets of grilles for the sake of symmetry.

At 8.3mm, the Redmi chú ý 4 is slimmer than its predecessor, but a tad heavier. The additional heft though isn’t an issue & the weight is distributed quite well, so you really don’t feel any discomfort using it for an extended time. It feels sturdy, and I can’t put my finger khổng lồ it, but it feels nicer, more solid than the Redmi chú ý 3.

The Redmi cảnh báo 4’s kiến thiết is anything but revolutionary and there are only subtle changes from its predecessor. Yet the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and in the end, we have a nicely designed budget điện thoại cảm ứng that feels great to use.

*

The Redmi chú ý 4 sports a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS display – the 1080 x 1920 resolution translating to a pixel density of 401ppi. It boasts of a 2.5 chiều curved glass up front that feels good lớn use.

The display is same as its predecessor, but it is definitely brighter than the one last time around, and hence the sunlight legibility has improved. The màu sắc accuracy is better too. For a budget device, the display is quite good, really. The text and images are razor sharp & the colors are quite vivid. The display is a tad reflective, although the viewing angles are great.

Xiaomi also offers a Reading Mode with a xanh light filter that makes it easier to read text at night.

There’s one thing though that I wished would have gone away with the latest iteration. There’s a black border running around the display. While it’s minimal, it is very apparent specially when the face of the smartphone is white.

In the affordable smartphones category, xiaomi has always tried to lớn pack in a punch in terms of hardware, and the Redmi note 4 is no different. Powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 (MSM8953) processor clocked at 2GHz và an integrated Adreno 506 GPU, the Redmi cảnh báo 4 comes in three RAM configurations – 2GB, 3GB, & 4GB – with 32GB or 64GB of internal storage.

The Redmi cảnh báo 3 was powered by the Snapdragon 650 chipset, but the Redmi lưu ý 4 is not really a downgrade as the naming convention indicates. Unlike the 28nm Snapdragon 650, the Snapdragon 625 is built on the 14nm architecture và offers better energy efficiency. It might not be the powerhouse as the 650 is, but the mid-range So
C chugs along nicely through everyday tasks.

It is able lớn handle almost everything I threw at it. There is no lag switching between apps & while multi-tabbed browsing – granted I was on the đứng đầu end variant with 4GB of RAM, but I don’t think the 3GB variant would stutter by any means. A slight performance degradation is expected, but nothing that could be a showstopper. The 2GB variant though could be a tad rough for a nguồn user, but would be good enough for a casual user.

Multi-tasking on the Redmi note 4 is a breeze, và it can handle graphic-intensive games without breaking a sweat. Essentially, the đứng đầu variant of the Redmi cảnh báo 4 can handle everything with aplomb và is arguably the best performing smartphone in its category.

*

The xiaomi mi Redmi note 4 packs in a 4100m
Ah non-removable battery. The large capacity combined with software optimizations and the power efficiency of Snapdragon 625 makes it a battery powerhouse. I was able to lớn squeeze in two days of battery life – one-and-a-half in case of heavy usage – and it lasted over 15 hours in my continuous video clip playback test.

The battery life on the Redmi cảnh báo 4 is impressive, and it hurts that there is no tư vấn for quick charging – even more important in smartphones with large battery capacity.

The Redmi chú ý 4 features a hybrid SIM tray, so you can either use two SIMs or one Nano-SIM & one micro
SD card. You might want khổng lồ keep this in consideration when making a choice between the 32GB & 64GB variant if you want to lớn use two SIM cards. The Redmi chú ý 3 supported micro
SD cards of up to lớn 32GB only which was a bummer. Thankfully, that’s taken care of now và you can put in those 128GB micro
SD cards as well.

I’m slightly disappointed to lớn find a micro
USB port in a điện thoại cảm ứng released in 2017. I would’ve liked a Type-C port instead, although I’m sure not many people will have an issue with it. Also, just like its predecessor, the Redmi chú ý 4 too gives NFC connectivity a miss.

The fingerprint scanner on the Redmi lưu ý 4 is mounted on the rear just below the camera unit. It’s always on, so you can unlock your phone directly from sleep. While the accuracy of the fingerprint sensor is pretty good, it takes a while for the phone to lớn wake up và unlock. It’s not the fastest fingerprint scanner out there clearly. Also, on a few occasions the detection would fail if the finger is slightly wet.

The Redmi note 3 disappointed many in the camera department, & Xiaomi has focused on improving the camera on this year’s model. The 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.0 lens is a testament of that.

In well-lit conditions, it can take some great landscape shots. When shooting close-ups of objects or macro shots, the màu sắc reproduction is quite good và there are plenty of details. Sharpness is a mixed bag though. The camera focuses quickly, which is also great for taking some fine shots of moving subjects. If you’re shooting in HDR, you’ll manage to squeeze in more details, although it takes slightly longer to lớn shoot the photos.

In low-light though, xiaomi has still a lot to lớn do. If you put in some effort, you would manage lớn get some decent shots, but once you zoom in, you’d find a lot of graininess.

The 5MP front camera sports a f/2.0 lens và most selfies in well-lit conditions come out well with good màu sắc accuracy and details. Indoors or in low-light though, it’s a hit-or-miss, which is pretty much the case with most smartphones in this price segment.

In terms of video clip recording, the rear camera can record videos at 1080p resolution & the unique is good enough. The video clip recording on front camera is now downgraded lớn 720p compared to lớn 1080p on its predecessor & it fails lớn impress in terms of details.

The camera phầm mềm on the Redmi cảnh báo 4 includes a variety of modes, including a manual mode that lets you tweak the ISO, white balance, & exposure settings, and a wealth of other options.

The Redmi chú ý 4 runs MIUI 8 based on app android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The company is testing a Nougat preview of MIUI, và will be rolling it out in the coming months. MIUI 8 is one of the popular android customizations, và although it’s quirky & can be frustrating to lớn use at times, it packs in a lot of features và has its tóm tắt of fans.

And it has gone better. On Redmi lưu ý 4, MIUI 8 is quite smooth and polished. With the internals it packs, the điện thoại cảm ứng thông minh just breezes with MIUI 8, và even the usual culprits lượt thích system animations are a user experience delight.

One of the highlights of the MIUI 8 is the focus on privacy with Dual Apps and Second Space. While the Dual Apps feature allows you khổng lồ create two instances of any tiện ích (so for example, you can use two Whats
App accounts on the same phone), the Second Space feature allows users to lớn separate personal và business information on the same device.

While the MIUI 8 has an improved dialer app, it also boasts of a caller ID feature with information about the delivery staff of online stores & local on-demand services. The Messages ứng dụng bundles similar messages into folders so texts from banks, service providers, online stores, etc. Don’t clog up your inbox. These are very useful, and unique, features that xiaomi has specifically introduced for the Indian market.

MIUI 8 includes a one-handed mode, which is accessible with a left-to-right swipe gesture across the navigation keys. You can shrink the screen kích thước down to lớn 4.0 inches, 4.5 inches, or 3.5 inches, making it more convenient to use the phone one-handed. There’s also the Quick Ball feature that lets you access shortcuts with ease – first introduced with the large-sized mày Max phablet.

The Redmi note 4 has a bunch of preloaded apps, & they can’t be uninstalled in case you don’t need any of these. That’s double whammy, really.

Overall, the overall software experience on the Redmi note 4 is great, & there are a bunch of useful features that you’d only appreciate once you start using it. I’m not a big fan hâm mộ of MIUI’s aggressive memory management, but that apart, there are no complaints really if you warm up to it.

After the massive success of Redmi chú ý 3, the Redmi cảnh báo 4 had tough shoes to fill. & looks lượt thích we’ve got another winner on our hands. The Redmi chú ý 4 is definitely the new benchmark for other budget smartphones launching in 2017 lớn match up to. It’s not really an unknown territory for the Chinese company lớn find itself in.

The Redmi chú ý 4 is definitely the new benchmark for other budget smartphones launching in 2017 khổng lồ match up to.

The Redmi note 4 is not perfect – the camera still misses the beat – but it is a well-rounded package that one wouldn’t hesitate khổng lồ recommend – especially if one needs a big screen & long battery life. Packed in a neat chassis, the smartphone performs great & is a compelling điện thoại that gets a direct entry into any best-of lists. Interestingly, there’s nothing revolutionary in the Redmi cảnh báo 4, yet it’s a nice progression from the predecessor that fixes most of latter’s flaws và presents itself as a fantastic value-for-money device.

In India, the base model comes with 2GB of RAM và 32GB storage và retails for ₹9,999 ($145). Unless you’re a basic điện thoại thông minh user, you might want to lớn skip it & go for the other variant with 3GB of RAM và 32GB storage that is available for ₹10,999 ($160). Of course, if you don’t mind spending more, picking up the top variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage for ₹12,999 ($190) is a no-brainer.
