----------------------------------------My girl Uruka gets a happy ending and gets revealed as the fireworks girl! Extremely happy with my girl getting her ending and I love the fact that I got to experience her story in full with a happily ever after finale directly attached to the main story. The manga will now enter "parallel stories" with Uruka's route given the 1/5. I am just happy that it's not labelled as a Parallel Story. The other heroines are getting Parallel Story 1: Rizu. Parallel Story 2: Fumino. Parallel Story 3: Asumi and Parallel Story 4: Mafuyu. All heroines will get their parallel stories! It was a nice gesture from Tsutsui Taishi who confirmed that he will leave the fans to interpret a true ending from the parallel stories if they wanted to. Choose your canon route!
*
^ How to locate main girl 101.Out of the remaining four routes, I am very excited for Sensei route. It's the only route I would have been okay with in the main story if it wasn't to be for my girl Uruka. With that said, I will also read all other routes, including Fumino's. I came to like her in the end. Also Rizu and Asumi are going to be fantastic bonuses I look forward to read as well. 5/5
The title of the manga has been changed after this chapter. The manga is now called Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai ~ Route: If with new assistant working with the upcoming chapters replacing one of the long standing previous ones.Uruka is also given the closest fireworks girl perspective compared to other girls so there is that. It can be easily explained why she is the only heroine with a dual cover with Nariyuki during the run of the manga or the cover heroine of the fireworks festival arc which contained the Jinx.If this doesn't make these you understand nothing will. The author categorically said he intends to write the parallel routes 2-5 and giving them titles "What If" 1-4 starting with Rizu, followed by Fumino, Senpai and rounding it off with Sensei so all of the remaining heroines get an ending so that the fans can consider their own canon ending. It's opening the door for all the fans to have a happy ending of their own. But the fact remains the same that the main story ends with Uruka being the end girl in this chapter.

Goodbye, Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga
Dekinai

April 12th, 2017

That day, I was browsing the r/manga subreddit in search for a series to read. My fandom for Japanese content was still fresh at that time. Not even half a year had passed since I completed the Naruto anime in its entirety along with various others. However, I eventually grew tired to my proliferating consumption of shows.

I needed a change of pace, so I looked to manga as the next focus of attention. Manga was just as big as anime in terms of popularity. There was a chance I could find something interesting to me like how it happened with anime due its seemingly infinite library.

I already had seen my share of action, drama, and sports shows, what with the aforementioned ninja show, Yahari Ore no Seishun wa Machigatteiru (Ore
Gairu), and Ace of Diamond. For my next series, I wanted to tone down the narrative intensity. As such, I looked to the romance and comedy genres as my emphasis.

Nisekoi was a candidate that I initially advocated for, but I found out that it ended just months beforehand. Kimi no Todoke was another suggestion, but since there was a lack of released English translated scans after the anime adaptation, I decided not to pursue it. Re:Zero could’ve worked for me, but that was a light novel series. I’d rather read comics than lines of text. I would eventually read light novels later down the line, but for now, I didn’t consider it.

On the eleventh hour of searching, I found one series that was coincidentally starting out its serialization. It was a romantic comedy which was based on the difficulties of studying high school senior students and the subsequent connotation of love some of the students have for their tutor. That series was called “Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai”.

The tenth chapter of the series was released by the time I discovered the series on that day. The story, though new in its existence, contained an interesting premise (Nariyuki Yuiga, the protagonist, must tutor his students in their preferred subjects so they can enter the university of their choice), but its plot held an unsure future in that regard.

Readers weren’t sure if the plot could last for longer than 20 or so chapters. Romance is a tricky genre to tackle since its stories always conclude with the main couple falling in love after numerous shenanigans between them which prolonged their confessions. If Boku
Ben weren’t careful about its story’s progression, it could fall in danger of dragging itself for too long, making it stale and displeasing for fans.

Still, I felt there was a clear chance for me to grow with a new story like Boku
Ben, so I gave it a try. I was beginning to read manga, and Boku
Ben was beginning to exist. It was a perfect match of inexperience.

Thus, after finishing Chapter 10, I went to Chapter 1 and read the whole story in less than an hour.

December 31st, 2018

That was the date when I published “Finding Strength From Your Own Incapabilities”. Never did I think that I would feel compelled to write about a manga series such as the one I did on that day. I knew I had a knack for writing about the things I loved, but the possibility of writing about anime—much less manga–was asinine to consider.

Reddit link here.

I didn’t know how to write about manga. There wasn’t a guidebook that magically popped out of nowhere and showed me how to make a Japanese content op-ed. I just interpreted that the main idea coalesced with every arc of the story, wrote my thoughts on the matter, presented multiple sources from the story to prove it in chronological order, hinted at how it impacted me personally, revised and revised again, and that was it. “Finding Strength” was the result of a multiple-month project that came from the fiery passion I held for Boku
Ben. Nobody had done something for the series, so I whipped up a piece to fill make up for the vacancy.

Hands down one of the funniest bits in the manga. I died laughing so much after reading it for the first time. (From Page 4 of Chapter 59)(From Page 5 of Chapter 59)

Even so, since “Finding Strength” was the first manga review piece I did, I was worried that my presupposed naivety of writing would turn people off from reading. And yet, when I posted it for the interwebs, everyone that read my post loved it. In the Boku
Ben subreddit, r/We
Cant
Study, my work was gilded twice, becoming the first post ever to receive awards in the forum’s history. I expected people to snide on my work, but they commented to commend me instead.

After digesting the audience’s positive response, I became staunchly motivated to continue writing more about manga. The moment I decided to write about that subject, I felt as if I found a new calling. Though I was burdened by college classes at the time of posting “Finding Strength”, I was already inching to write my next piece on the series or any other outside of Boku
Ben.

The series didn’t play a role in just my writing. It altered my affinity for manga to such a high degree that it prompted me to purchase a physical copy of a volume, which was something I never did before. I only used my money for the bare necessities such as food, repairs, and clothes. I was the paragon of thriftiness, but splurging $15 on volume 1 of Boku
Ben didn’t concern me. It was bigger issue for me to not buy it and fail to contribute to the series’ growth.

One year after “Finding Strength,” I wrote “They Didn’t Learn: Ending Fans’ Hopes in Under Five Minutes”, which was about the controversial ending of the anime’s adapation. Looking back at the way I wrote it, I can now say that I felt embarrassed of the content I wrote since that happened on a whim of sheer anger and outrage in response to the finale.

Reddit link here.

I hoped for the anime to continue for a third season at the bare minimum, but that was denied by the direction of the powers that be, preferring instead to leave all the potential revenue to the source material. I was convinced that Boku
Ben could continue to raise its profile by the anime. Publish more music, promote “Study”, the musical group that featured the show’s voice actresses which was crafted for the FUCKING PROMOTION of the show, build on the animation quality. But nope. Needless to say, I’m still salty about the finale. FUCK.

I’m grateful to Boku
Ben for providing me the spark of reverence for myself to which I could use to prop others who are struggling with their difficulties. I learned not to deride them and minimize their worth but respect them with the belief that they’ll improve and grow.

Boku
Ben gave me the incentive of writing about anime and manga in my blog. The closest I came to doing so was when I did a short reflection on Episode 13 of Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso in mid-2017. From there, I’ve been full guns blazing with my writing. That much has been clear with Go-toubun no Hanayome, Ore
Gairu, Chainsaw Man, and Kanojo Okarishimasu.

Though those series holds greater popularity than Boku
Ben had generated in its duration, I still view it as suffice to say the latter is ranked as my favorite series ever. I’m not kidding when I profess that Boku
Ben was the genesis for my retrospective writing. Had it not been for Boku
Ben, I would not have been able to convert an unknown liability into my chief subject.

Though the series has ended after more than three years of serialization, I’m sure that its theme will stay with me long after it has come to pass in relevance. It was the first manga series that I closely bonded with for weeks on end and lived vicariously through—save for the romance aspect. Still, that shit was so cute to see as a fan.

But besides that, Boku
Ben has made me a firm believer of partisanship in shipping wars. I will be a Rizu Ogata x Nariyuki Yuiga fan FOR THE REST OF MY FUCKING LIFE. Though it was bold for Tsutsui pull off the “visual novel” ending of the series—i.e. giving every girl their own route with Nariyuki—it was ultimately effective as it appeased every faction and subsequently avoided catastrophe. I’m glad I was able to witness Ogata have an ending with Nariyuki. She was happy just like how the rest of the main girls were happy in their routes, so I’m happy too.

Boku
Ben was the first I read in its infancy. It was the first I saw that grew into a staple of its corresponding genre. It was the first that touched my soul. It was the first that I felt genuinely elated in watching over its television existence—not once have I frowned when I watched the show’s 26 episodes and two OVAs (except for the last three minutes of course).

It was the first that touched, grasped, held, and caressed my soul like a sleeping toddler. The simile sounds strange to read but I believe it’s appropriate. I was raised within the manga scene by Boku
Ben.

Man, I’m so happy right now.

While everyone is going to be hyped for the popular shows coming in the near future (MHA, OPM, MP100, Jojo’s, Promised Neverland), your boi will be all in on We Can’t Study. It’s one of the first manga series I’ve ever followed since its inception. It’s dear to my heart. I can’t wait to see the first episode.

From yours truly after the anime announcement was leaked on Twitter.

Remember when I talked about my life for a quick second in “Finding Strength”? Well, I have an update about my life that I’d like to share. I’ve graduated from my university with a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management with cum laude honors. I work for two different websites as a freelance writer with no signs of stopping anytime soon.

As much as I have risen from my situation of not having a direction with my studies, I’m aware that my life story doesn’t end after graduation. Sticking true with the messages relayed by Taruaki Yuiga, Nariyuki’s father, I’m continuing to strive for a better future than what I have cultivated thus far. The work continues, the struggle persists, but my resilience will endure.

And so, I bid Boku
Ben adieu—and on my birthday no less.

December 23rd, 2020

I’ve written something about Boku
Ben every year at exactly the same month. Was it destiny that I completed the trifecta today?

In any case, you have given me everything so I’m thanking you for everything.
